Dreams

Sylvia Quek

“You see things; and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say, 'Why not?'” this is a quote made by George Bernard Shaw and it inspired me a lot. I used to think: if only dreams would be my reality. I dream dreams and think of myself doing it, and think of it as impossible.

I once read a story about a boy who wrote a seven page story describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. However, his teacher rated his story an F. The teacher claimed that he was too young to have such a dream and asked him to write something more realistic. The boy thought hard, and finally decided to hand in the same piece of paper. He then told the teacher “you can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.” Now, this boy is living in his 4,000-square-foot house, 200-acre horse ranch. He said “I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.” When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”

Well, this story really made me hold onto my dream. “There are some people, who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.” This is another quote by Douglas H. Everett. I now have a new dream, and that is, to make my dreams from true. The only person who can stop myself from making these dreams come true, is myself.

We had dreams of growing up when we were young, and now that we’re grown up, we made ourselves new dreams. Cornel Sanders started his business when he was sixty, and started the whole successful business of the famous fast food restaurant we all know about- KFC.

I will pursue my dream, my goals, and I won’t stop just there. I’d move onto greater dreams, because I now question myself ‘Why not?’
